Ebook About A NEW EDITION UPDATED IN 2020 • Why is it so hard to say "I made a mistake" — and really believe it? When we make mistakes, cling to outdated attitudes, or mistreat other people, we must calm the cognitive dissonance that jars our feelings of self-worth. And so, unconsciously, we create fictions that absolve us of responsibility, restoring our belief that we are smart, moral, and right—a belief that often keeps us on a course that is dumb, immoral, and wrong. Backed by decades of research, Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) offers a fascinating explanation of self-justification—how it works, the damage it can cause, and how we can overcome it. Extensively updated, this third edition has many recent and revealing examples, including the application of dissonance theory to divisive social issues such as the Black Lives Matter movement and he said/she said claims. It also features a new chapter that illuminates how cognitive dissonance is playing a role in the currently polarized political scene, changing the nation’s values and putting democracy itself at risk. “Every page sparkles with sharp insight and keen observation. Mistakes were made—but not in this book!” —Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness “A revelatory study of how lovers, lawyers, doctors, politicians—and all of us—pull the wool over our own eyes . . . Reading it, we recognize the behavior of our leaders, our loved ones, and—if we’re honest—ourselves, and some of the more perplexing mysteries of human nature begin to seem a little clearer.” —Francine Prose, O, The Oprah MagazineBook Mistakes Were Made (but Not by Me) Third Edition: Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts Review :
Captivating material, excellent look at the ways we deceive ourselves, rationalize our opinions, double-down rather than admit an error, and believe the accuracy of our memory. It is beyond me why the authors use their final chapter to belie their own theses and exemplify in their own opinions the very errors of thought they describe so well in the preceding chapters. They dilate at length on President Trump (whom they only refer to as "Trump") AND his supporters."...we do not intend to imply that Donald Trump is Benito Mussolini. But the two men have one important thing in common: They exhibit all the classic characteristics of a demagogue." (Just "one" thing in common? Surely there must be more.)"...and no American president before Trump fomented us-versus-them thinking to such an extreme degree...." (Bitter clingers and deplorables, anyone?)"You are a Trump supporter. How do you reduce dissonance when faced with the evidence of your president's troubling, outrageous, and foolish falsehoods?" (Loved that "your" president.)The authors imply that the 70+ million Trump voters in 2020--the poor, racist, duped souls--apparently still haven't been self-aware enough to "reduce dissonance".In preceding chapters the authors extol the benefits of seeing both sides, of recognizing that none of us is all-good or all-bad, of realizing that people can support someone who is not a carbon copy of oneself. Perhaps they would benefit from re-reading their own words and taking them to heart. In the authors' own words, "...two fundamental lessons from dissonance theory emerge: First, the ability to reduce dissonance helps us in countless ways, preserving our beliefs, confidence...self-esteem, and well-being. Second, this ability can get us into big trouble."QED The book starts out well, but then falls victim to it's own message. The authors selectively look at information to support their perspective. Here's an easily verifiable example. It's true the psychiatry residents in training don't get much training in the "questioning, skeptical essence of science." HOWEVER, it's because they've already received that in the 4 years of medical school preceding their additional 4 years of residency. It's part of the evidence based curriculum. As you read the book, you cant help but think that the authors have a chip on their shoulders.
